This week in ISM I completed my first research assessment and prepared interview questions for my potential mentor. My first research assessment was about the specific topics I want to learn more about regarding journalism and I was able to expand on why learning about those topics was important for me. After taking an introductory journalism class and having experience in the journalism industry through the school newspaper, I continue to gain more and more experience, but there are some topics I have not been exposed to. Therefore, having the opportunity to list those topics and describe why I want to learn about them was a valuable one. It benefited me and gave me a better understanding on my topic as a whole and was a useful road map for my ISM future.
Also, I formulated my interview questions which was a more challenging task to complete compared to my research assessment because I had a harder time thinking of questions to ask a potential mentor, but after viewing examples, I was able to create meaningful ones. I believe that both of these assignments go so well together because they allow me to visualize and anticipate the research I will be completing this year, and will help me stay focused on my topic as the school year gets busier and busier.
This week was a short one due to a staff development day and Labor Day and I am beyond grateful for the extra days of rest as I can recharge for the upcoming week. So excited for what the rest of my year in ISM will look like!
